There's the Kiera Knightly one from December 2005 (or thereabouts). Donald Sutherland plays Mr. Bennet and he does a great job.

As for the book, I just re-read it for the third time, so I can actually help with that quesiton. They do talk about it, briefly, and the basic jist of it is that when they were young, she was pretty and flirty, and her charms got the better of him, and now he sort of regrets it - except that regret takes a lot of work, and he's pretty lazy.

Is there another film adaptation? I only know of the BBC miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth.

You're right, Mr Bennet is quite interesting. I've always wondered what got a man like him to marry a woman like her in the first place. I don't think the book speaks of it. Or maybe it does and I missed it.

That's a great scene. I adore the book and the two of its film adaptations that I've seen. Mr. Bennet is an interesting character - he knows what is right but is not always able to do it (hence marrying Mrs. Bennet in the first place).
